Social Media Strategy: First have a Plan. Then Execute the Plan.

by Chris Brown on Wednesday, January 20, 2010

Just like with anything, you need a roadmap or you’ll end up lost.

Social Media: Why are you doing it? What do you hope to achieve?

Here are some possible goals and strategies of your social media program:

1. Humanize the company and the brand. Show the personality and culture of our organization.
2. Immediate and actionable market research where we can provide immediate feedback to the company to make better and faster changes in response to audience opinions.
3. Provide clear information, perspective, history and accurate product, service and company information
4. Create a mechanism to enable us to respond to the target market, consumers, customers and clients.
5. More importantly to engage them and get them to interact with our company and brand so they actually have a relationship with us.

Social media marketing is a two way street where you encourage open discussion in a way to engage and encourage feedback. Shouldn’t building a relationship be the goal? It’s not print media, but social media.

Which one(s) apply to your business?

Chris,

I couldn’t agree more. I think so many people have got quickly wrapped up in Social Media Marketing, without even thinking about they want to accomplish, or what they are doing. Everyone would do well to check out this post. Thanks

I love the SMART advice, in a business plan it is also smart to not become a stick in the mud, so married to your plan that if a better aspect arises, you do not adjust.

Jim:
You are so right. Being flexible is so important! Especially since it seems like things change at the speed of light. But even so, keeping the same goal and maybe modifying the metrics or timetable allows you to still make great progress!
